Robert Randolph & the Family Band: Daytrotter Session
.

Robert Randolph might promote the word of the Lord and His mercy mild, but he and his Family Band rarely go mild themselves, sacrificing limbs and dry shirts for music that places a life-sized sun between the front and back cages of everyone listening's ribs and jackrabbits in every foot. The alternative form of scripture and the Good Word that Randolph writes and performs is aerobic and spindly, spiky and thumping, taking people into places where they have no choice but to FEEL it, really, fucking FEEL it. It sways and swerves you, forces you to participate in the words and the music, probably like you've never done before. Randolph, as a front man, is powerful and enthralling, casting his groove out as if his spirit is unable to be contained. He's a believer and a shaker, a man who insists on being guided by those inner coals and those deep-down convictions that are branded on his soul. He and his band's new album, "We Walk This Road," carries on his tradition of making some of the most incredible praise music of anyone writing and working today. It swells with heart and with the spontaneous hallelujahs of people who are alive with fire and joy, both working in collusion with each other to make a triumphant trumpeting.
Randolph sings and plays to the heavens, but it just so happens that the moon is located in the same northerly direct where he cocks his throat and it feels as if he doesn't care if he sounds like a preacher or a common wolf howling it out and up to the white orb and the clouds. The band, from the pews of the churches of Orange, New Jersey, stumps for salvation and the ever-lifting power of the idea that things aren't going to end when the eyes close for the last time. He sings about seeing others again on the other side and that soothing thought of moving on to somewhere else, somewhere thought to be better, is obviously a religious building block - the payoff that all followers are begging on - and it plays out frequently in Randolph's songs. During the morning of this recording, at Big Orange, the day before the band was set to play the Austin City Limits festival, Randolph was already wired, ecstatic and in great spirits, commenting at the end of recording, "May God bless all of you out there. Cookies, brownies and cakes. May you all have a piece of candy." He makes you positively feel lucky to be alive and while he feels like he's got the Big Guy to thank for such blessings in his life, it comes across as not needing to be a requirement. We don't have to belong to any church to get filled with his spirit, to feel what he's feeling. He gets us there. He gets it into our bones. He knows that there are all kinds of points and halfway points where people can rest their faiths or non-faiths and he sings on "I Still Belong To Jesus," "Someone woke up today and saw it all in a different way/…I still belong/Even though I turned my back/The finger-pointin' preacher screams/He's huntin' sinners in his dreams/But Jesus didn't start no war/He reached his hands out to the poor/He said, 'The lame will walk and the blind will see'/Take care my people, you'll take care of me." He makes us believe.

MADOU SIDIKI DIABATÉ, AHMED FOFANA & ALEX WILSON ''MALI LATINO''

The idea for Mali Latino was born on tour and is the brainchild of master kora player Madou Sidiki Diabaté (brother of Toumani Diabaté) and pianist Alex Wilson.
In 2004, while on the road with Malian singer and griot Kandia Kouyate, Madou and Alex struck up an instant connection and at the end of the tour decided to cement the musical encounter by recording a track together - Remercier les travailleurs.
Madou then returned to Mali but the two remained in contact. Skipping four years ahead, Alex was offered Composer Residency at the prestigious Aldeburgh Music and his first thought was to continue on the project initiated in 2004.
In preparation, Alex visited Mali in February 2008, six months ahead of the residency, and it was there that Madou introduced him to Ahmed Fofana. Alex was struck by Ahmed's virtuosity, musicality and openness and they all agreed that he would be an ideal third musician to lead the project.
In September of 2008, the three found themselves in the Suffolk countryside with the resources of the Britten-Pears building at their disposal. An intense week followed where the three penned fifteen song ideas followed by an hour's recital to a rapturous audience.
An album recording followed, featuring the full band lineup of trumpet, trombone, latin percussion section, balafon, kora, piano, bass and Malian vocal, totalling nine musicians.
Expect fiery latin percussion mixed with the driving village rhythms of Mali, with the virtuosic kora and piano of Madou and Alex and the intense combination of mandingue and Cuban vocals.

Marc Hype - The World's 2nd Greatest Christmas Mixtape

This time last year Music of Substance's Chris Read and I got together to compile a mixtape of funky and unusual Christmas records that we modestly called the "World's Greatest Christmas Mixtape". For what started out as a bit of fun, the response was pretty incredible with thousands of downloads in just a week or so. We joked at the time that we had enough records left over to have done it twice so, with the Christmas season coming round again, we figured we'd go for it a second time. The result is what we're even less seriously calling the "World's Second Greatest Christmas Mixtape".As with volume 1, there's a mix of funk, soul, 80s hip hop, reggae, jazz and much more, all with that Christmas theme. Chris and I have done one half of the mix each which you'll find on our respective Mixcloud pages.

DARONDO ''LET MY PEOPLE GO'' (2006)

A mystery to most, Darondo records are high on the wants-lists of many collectors. He opened-up for James Brown and lived a colorful lifestyle hanging with folks like the notorious Fillmore Slim. Take a listen to these tracks, released for the first time together on an album, and you may agree that he could have been the next Al Green or Sly Stone. But about 25 years ago Darondo disappeared.
Releasing three singles in the early 70s he mixed low-rider soul with blues and R'n'B. He delivered in a variety of styles from the socially-charged “Let My People Go" to the sexually-driven funk of “Legs". All three singles were recorded in the Bay Area, and both sides of each of the singles are fantastic productions.
“You can hear a little bit of everything," says Darondo about his music style. “There's a little jazz and a little soul. They say if you Black you supposed to have soul. I got Latin flavor in me so there's some Latin in it. Definitely got the Blues in it. I sound kinda' country but I grew up in the Bay Area," he adds.
But after the release of his three 45s Darondo stopped recording. “It was mostly me, just having a good time with a real good hobby," he says. “It wasn't about money but about having fun. Something I just liked to do. Maybe your dream is to be a James Brown or Frank Sinatra but those were just mostly dreams to me. I thought about it, but this was just a hobby for me. I liked competing musically with my friends. That was fun."
Darondo now lives in Northern California with his wife and family and is delighted to hear his music is getting a second wind courtesy of DJs and collectors like the UK-based Gilles Peterson who recently picked “Didn't I" for his Digs America compilation.
The six tracks from the three original singles are featured here, along with three previously unreleased songs that were recently discovered on a demo reel.

ebo taylor - love & death

Little Axe - Bought For A Dollar, Sold For A Dime

Doch mit "Bought For A Dollar, Sold For A Dime" erlebt Little Axe eine wahre Auferstehung.

Super Funky Afro Breaks

Long regarded as Japan's number one DJ, the grand imperial DJ MURO is the self proclaimed 'King Of Digging' and boasts a long list of credentials which more than back up the claim. A Tokyo native who burst onto Japan's nascent domestic hip-hop scene in the late 1980s part of the Krush Posse with DJ Krush and Go, Muro's musical story finds him at various points wearing the hats of rapper, DJ, producer and remixer. His group Microphone Pager was the first Japanese rap crew to earn an international release ('Planet Rap', Tommy Boy, 1992), but it wasn't until a visit to New York in 1996 and his guest spots on underground radio mix shows that his worth as a DJ began to win recognition. In 1997 he opened his store 'Savage' in Tokyo, and his record label 'Incredible' followed a year later. 1999 saw the release of his celebrated collaboration with NYC icons Lord Finesse and A.G., 'The Vinyl Athletes.' From the mid 90s onwards, mixtapes such as his King of Diggin', Super Disco Breaks and A Taste of Chocolate series established him as one of the sharpest selectors around. They were the foundation of his reputation as one of the world's most proficient and productive spin doctors: he maintains a relentless release schedule of CDs spanning everything from golden era hip-hop and deep dub to obscure disco 12s, rare soul 45s and Latin and Brazilian flavours. His ever-growing catalogue contains collaborations with the likes of Paul Nice, Dimitri From Paris and Lord Finesse; official label retrospectives on Blue Note, Fania and Stones Throw; a celebrated Trojan compilation; a library music collection with fellow Japanese DJ Mitsu The Beats, and The Kings Of Digging for BBE with fellow diggers Kon & Amir. Japanese master spinner DJ MURO´s first African mix-CD produced in the year of the first African World Cup - is everything followers of his countless CDs would expect: serious selection, impeccable presentation and impossibly rare titles played alongside new edits and alternate versions. Included are a killer new 45 release by The Qualitons, a deep Fela Kuti cover by Japanese jazz don Akira Ishikawa, and cuts from Manu Dibango and Buari. Of course, there´s plenty of obscure, undercover treats too, such as a rare and sought-after Ivorian bomb by Guehi Jean Et Son Ensemble.

Blackjoy "Erotis"

Blackjoy - in his own words:
"To give you a lil bit of info on the album, Erotis is a teenage love in 48 minutes. Aqeel and Sandra Nkaké are the main vocalists. Instruments used are keys, bass, guitar and drums. None of the record have been recorded live, this is all studio sessions and overdubs. If you follow me you may find some stuff you already know in there, all mixed and arranged differently.
We created a team to finish the whole concept. Flo Behar Abracadaboudaram has wrote the magical story, Yann Stofer provided amazing photos, and Guillaume Leroyer is orchestrating the design and artwork."

FUNK'N'STEIN The Band

UK based Soul Unsigned offer their final release for 2010. It's the follow up to the band's “The Next Level” from last year, the outing aptly titled “Funky Mission” from the Israeli funk outfit Funk 'n' stein. The release pulls together the best from the bands two previously released albums, soulfully cultivated by label boss Phil Driver in an attempt to bring the band to a wider audience.
Their Facebook profile says “Funk'n'stein is an 8-piece funk/soul group made out of nationally known and respected musicians who use their uncompromising groove to get their message through. With songs about love, making a change, the need for peace, and funky beats they sweep you into the twirling soul and groove hurricane they bring to the stage.”

Was soll ich sagen?
